How to Stand Up While Surfing

Surfing requires a lot of skill and patience. For beginners, a challenging part of surfing is to stand up on the surf board while catching a wave.  This requires balance and skill which can be achieved by following some of the following guidelines the Akahmai team suggests:

Keep your head in a straight-forward position in order to keep your concentration and help maintain your balance.  If you are a beginner its better if you place your stronger leg towards the back when you stand up. It’s the same as with snowboarding or skate boarding.

Your feet should be placed in a position so that your legs are wider than your shoulders, and your front foot is placed across the deck. This type of position will give you a strong stance on the surf board.  When you stand up on the board you should bend your knees slightly, lowering your center of gravity and helping to secure your balance.

Now your back leg should tuck in slightly and transfer your body weight to front leg by pushing your hips forward.   You will be using lower half of your body to secure and maintain balance.  In your next steps you will be using upper half of your body to maintain overall balance.

As you secure a balance on your surf board with your legs, you should stretch both your arms out, as if you were walking across a balance beam.  But rather than out to your sides, stretch one arm towards the nose of the board, and the other towards the back.  Keep your head in that straight-forward position, in the same direction of your front arm.

Take plenty of time to practice on the beach before you head onto the waves.  Make sure you are comfortable with the steps and try them until they feel right.  Then when you’re ready, start paddling. Paddle until your board starts moving faster than you.  This is an indication for you to catch the wave. Don’t worry about falling down; the waves will help hold you up.  Just work to maintain your balance and stay on the board.  Once you get the hang of it, enjoy the ultimate feeling of riding on the waves.

Different Types of Underwater Diving

Exploring Earth’s oceans and bodies of water is a one of a kind experience. Did you know that there are a few options for exploring these underwater worlds? The idea is generally the same for all types of diving, however the methods can vary. Here are a few of the different kinds of diving that the Akahmai team can suggest trying sometime.

Open-water diving: This is the most common form of diving. Open water diving refers to the idea that the surface of the body of water the diver is in is immediately in contact with the Earth’s atmosphere. Therefore, if a problem arises, the diver is able to ascend vertically and reach air.

Wreck diving: Diving into the sunken vessels is an interesting kind of diving. Wreck dive sites are home to many different kinds of marine life species who take shelter in these vessels to escape from predators. The underlying possibility of finding antiques and artifacts is always an exciting part of wreck diving.

Cave diving: Cave diving is perfect for the divers who want to experience a unique adventure. Under- water cave diving is a rare kind of diving because of the high risk involved and the levels of skill required. Unlike other forms of diving where you are allowed to move freely, in cave diving you are required to follow a specific predefined route of narrow crevasses and small spaces. The payout of cave diving is getting to see all the different geological wonders in addition to exclusive plants and sea life.

Drift diving: Drift diving is a relaxed form of diving because the divers move with the help of water currents. As in most forms of open water diving, the diver propels until they catch suitable water currents. After catching a current, they let themself free from propelling. Drift diving is mostly used for recreational and marine life study purposes.

Breath-hold diving: Also known as snorkeling, breath-hold diving is the oldest form of diving without the use of any technical equipment. In this form of diving, the diver uses a mask, snorkel, and fins to dive into the deep waters. This form of diving completely depends upon the diver’s ability to swim well and hold their breath.

Saturation diving: This technique allows divers to avoid decompression sickness, which can be deadly. The diver’s tissue is saturated with enough breathing gas that will allow them to go to great depths for long periods of time. Saturation diving is practiced by professional divers, form commercial or scientific purposes.

In addition to these kinds of diving there are other forms of diving like night diving, ice diving, kayak diving, river diving and so on.  The Akahmai team would love to hear about your favorite underwater diving expeditions!

Food for Fuel

A healthy diet is essential for every athlete. Surfing is one such sport where surfers should maintain a healthy diet before and after hitting the waves. Here are a few tips the Akahmai team would like to share with you.

Consuming high energy drinks or energy bars does not satisfy your body’s needs.  In order to fuel your body for a good workout you should try to eat the following types of foods:  fresh fruits, oatmeal, high-fiber cereal, trial mix, granola with yogurt and berries, peanut butter and banana sandwich, dried fruits, whole grain bread, eggs, nuts, black beans, and tofu.

Then after you’re finished with your exercise or activity you always want to replenish your body.  For this you will need to eat some protein and vegetables.  Such foods are chicken, fish, beans, brown rice, steamed veggies, baked potato, sweet potato, or a salad.

When you’re conscious about what you eat your body will work like a well-oiled machine.  It will have all the sustenance it requires and will help you perform at your best.

Basics of Wind Surfing

Wind surfing is a hybrid sport formed by combining surfing and sailing. Different from normal surfing, wind surfing utilizes waves as well as wind to get motion. If you are already a surfer then it will be easy for you to take up windsurfing. You just need to add a few new movements and tricks to your surfing to be a wind surfer. Below mentioned are some basic tips Akahmai can suggest to begin wind surfing:

Before you hit the waves be sure that your windsurfing kit is ready. A wind surfing kit consists of a board, a rig, mast, boom, foot straps, and a deck plate.

Now you are ready to ride the waves. Before you start you should check some points:

a) Dagger board should always bend downwards when you start it and

b) Check that deck plate and foot straps should always hold the rig.

To experience the real sense of wind surfing you should push your board into the deep waters until you can no longer see the sea floor under the fin.

You can experience the real adventure of wind surfing when you are able to direct the movement of the board in accordance with the direction of the wind.

You should place your knees bent down on the board and grab the up haul to sail the board upwind side.

Unlike normal surfing you should keep your body and back straight in wind surfing. Try not to bend too much. This bending will have an effect on your wind surfing.

When you get familiar with the environment of wind surfing you should enjoy the swinging of the waves by holding the mast with both the hands.

Now that you have become perfect with the surfing part of the wind surfing, you should start learning the sailing part. You can start by practicing some moves in steering. Controlling the course of the board by using the mast is called steering. Steering involves the body balance, wind sense and ability to swing on waves.

Make sure that it’s not the winds that are controlling the direction of your board. You should control the movement by placing the lower hand on same side of the boom. You should be in the posture of a number 7.

Don’t panic if the board doesn’t stop. You just need to give a break to your driving by reversing the boom to the safety position.

By following these basic tips you will be able to enjoy yourself out on the waves.

The History of Radio

Founded in early 19th century by Marconi this small rectangular box has played an important role in our lives. Radio is also known as the first effectively functioning communication device.

This small device contains a transmitter to transmit information and a receiver to receive information. This transmitting and receiving information is called radio broadcasting. Radio broadcasting can be done with the help of radio stations and radio towers.

When radio was first invented it was only used for defense and industrial purposes. Radios were used in ships and cruise for off-shore communication. In those days radio was effectively used to transmit war information. There are many examples in which radio played a major role in saving people’s lives. The world known tragedy Titanic wreck is one such example.

Radios played a major role for the people at home during the world wars. Since there was no television then, radio was the main option available to people for receiving their news of war announcements, enemy attacks, and political events.  Broadcasting political events, such as presidential oaths or announcements was huge back then. Eventually each political party owned its own radio station. In addition to playing music, plays, and interviews, discussions and talks were also a big part of radio broadcasting.

With broadcasting towers strategically placed in various areas, today’s purpose of radio is to provide entertainment to its audience. Some would say that today radio transmission had reached its peak long ago. It expanded its reach into many parts of human life. Listeners can follow sports games which are broadcasted live with commentator reports of second by second actions.

In recent years technology has advanced very rapidly, but radio has not lost its place in the world. Still many people listen to both FM and AM radio.  The Akahmai team would love to hear what you like about radio.

Surfboard Repair Tips

Scraping your board on rocks or breaking your surfboard with the force of a wave is a common thing. You might go to nearby surf shops to repair them but it is not always possible to have a surf shop nearby. Also, the more the board breaks, the weaker it becomes. You can avoid this by following some of Akahmai’s simple tips with the use of some house-hold materials.

It is always a good idea for you to carry a repair kit of your own to help out with problems. If you don’t have one you can get one from a surf shop. Make sure your kit includes resin, filler, mixing cups, fiberglass cloths, sanding pads, and something sharp to cut the injured part off your board.

Make sure that every drop of water on the board is evaporated, particularly from the injured area.  You have to see that injured area is completely dried out. This method will help you prevent the discoloration of your board.

You have to cover the injured area. You can do it by preparing a mixture with the combination of resin, hardener, and a small wooden strip.  Coat the injured area with the mixture and cover it with a cloth. This cloth will now serve as a skin of the board. Make sure that there are no bubbles under the cloth. These bubbles will delay the repairing process. Watch carefully to make sure that the resin mixture becomes firm.

Check that no excess cloth remains on the board.  If any remains, trim it with the use of a knife before it hardens. The cracks and breaks should be fixed. As a last step smoothen the repaired area with the sand paper. You can start with 100 grit sand paper and go to 400 grit paper depending upon the roughness of the board. Now at last your surf board injury is cured and it is ready to ride again.
